Who are you?

My name is Dicky Kasim. I was born in Indonesia but spent half of my life in Perth, Western Australia. I am currently back in in Indonesia, residing on the island of gods, Bali.

What is your hobby?

My life revolves around the ocean!

Whether it's surfing, scuba diving or going on a SUP on flat days or just going for a morning swim in the sea.

I’ve never imagined turning

my photography passion as a career.

I was well taken care of by the companies but I realized being a sales person is not for me and I thought I should just bite the bullet and quit and pursue my passion in photography.

It was daunting, getting out of my comfort zone and starting something professionally from zero. However, I have never looked back. It has opened up another world to me.

I connected with so many amazing talented people, been to some amazing places and I have never worked so hard and felt so alive at the same time.

Back tracking to my university life, I did Bachelor of Marine Science back in Western Australia.

Thinking that I would be working closely with the government doing conservation work for the marine life, that chance unfortunately never happened.

When I moved to Bali, surfing was my priority and so I decided to look for a job in a surf shop and managed to be earn myself a position as a Retail Manager in a couple of top surfboard companies like Channel Islands Surfboards and Quiksilver Boardriders for a decade.

When did you start photography?

My family loves to travel and my dad would always have a camera on him. He started off with a manual focus Canon film DSLR and I remember one day he bought a Minolta film auto focus DSLR. To have that in the early 90s, I thought that was the coolest thing ever! So yeah, I guess I have been exposed to cameras and photography since a very young age.

However it was not until late in 2008 when I got my first Olympus point and shoot camera to muck around with, that I started taking photos myself.
After trying a few different camera brands over the years, Fujifilm cameras seemed to click with me best. Currently I have an XT4 and an XT10.

What sort of photography
do you like best?

I love embracing the diversity and the challenges for different types of photography.

I love the challenge of shooting nature, but at the same time, I’m passionate taking photos of interior/food, showcasing the beauty and making sure I can deliver my vision into a reality. In addition, being able to catch a family/couple’s special moment is something that's very rewarding to me.

As a photographer, I would want to be able to capture different scenes/subjects, with an added essence of art to my photos.

Why photography and
what inspires you?

Photography is an art. You have endless ways of capturing a subject and I love that challenge to be creative. I feel like I’m constantly learning with photography.
To me, a photo is something that you can keep physically for the rest of your life. A long lasting memory.
It's priceless. A moment that might not happened again, ever.

Whenever I go somewhere I would always have this vision of a photo of a particular scene, and be like “wow this would look good on a photo.
To be able to deliver for both my clients and myself with my work, that satisfaction that I received at the end is what inspires me the most.
